Here's another one from the archives. It's a piece about yerba mate that I wrote some time back for Epicurean.com.
My first encounter with yerba mate was a less than auspicious one. In fact, if you'd told me then that one day I'd be drinking copious amounts of the stuff I surely would have scoffed.
Thanks for the great post! Yerba mate always reminds me of my friends from Uruguay, and vice versa. I don't think I've ever seen them without their mate and thermos full of hot water.
I feel thatr mate is a great alternative to the traditional caffine we are use to in coffee. The best part about mate is that it seems as if it is more of a time release then a smack right in the face! This keeps the jitters away while keeping you on task!
